Windows Vista Home Premium Crashes Since New Update

Help... Wife just installed the new version of Avast and now our computer will not start up.  It does not make it through the start up sequence and never finishes loading, I can't even ctl alt delete to reboot it..... it was working fine before the upgrade.  We have ran this for the last fine, but it was time to renew.  It was Avast Internet Security.....The system is running Windows Vista Home Premium

yes, I have uninstalled Avast, but now the wireless is not connecting to the router.  I do have Windows up since doing the uninstall, but no connectivity.  THis was all working fine prior to the install.  I went into MSConfig and it appears almost everything is turned off.  Should I set this to automatic settings to get it going and then work backwards?
