MS SMTP 2000/2003
« on: November 28, 2005, 07:14:26 AM »
Hi
I am having a small problem with the SMTP scanner for exchange. It has been up for 3 days, but it has not scanned anything. We have received and sent numerous emails over those 3 days.

I have ASSP incoperated with this exchange installation to deal with Spam.

The port flow is:
       outside - 25 - ASSP - 125 - Exchange - 126 - ASSP - 25 - outside

The message on the Avast screen that seems significant is that it is waiting for a sub system to start.

I did try and attach an image of the screen in here, but I am having no luck with that at the moment either.

Any suggestions as to how I can get AVAST to scan exchange SMTP traffic?

Thanks in advance

Tim

1. Are you talking about the "MS SMTP 2000/2003" provider?
2. Is the "Internet Mail" provider installed and running? It should NOT be. That is, you can't have both "MS SMTP 2000/2003" AND "Internet Mail" providers active at the same time. On an Exchange Server, you should be using the "MS SMTP 2000/2003" one.
3. How exactly was the "MS SMTP 2000/2003" provider installed? Was it installed during the initial avast installation, or was it later added via the Add/Remove programs Control Panel applet?

Thanks

Firstly, thankyou for your rapid response.

Yes, I am talking about the "MS SMTP 2000/2003" provider.

The "internet Mail" provider is installed, but is NOT active. The "internet Mail" provider is reporting "No task is currently using this provider". And the status of it I assume is stopped, as "start" is the only option of the 3 that is not greyed out in the "provider actions"

The "MS SMTP 2000/2003" was installed later by added via the Add/Remove programs Control Panel applet. Been the first installation of the server edition of your software, I missed that is was not going to install by default (ie, I was been lazy, and did not read all the info I guess during the install! :-[!)
It was actually via another post in this forum, that I discovered the error of my may with the installation, that is not including "MS SMTP 2000/2003" in the initial install.

Cheers
Tim

I have just now gone into add/remove programs and now removed the internet mail provider.
But the MS SMTP 2000/2003 provider, is still waiting for a sub system to start??

Sorry for the delay.

I think there's a problem in the current version of the installer that if you add the SMTP provider later on, it doesn't get registered properly.

So I'm sorry to say this, but a solution would be to uninstall the product, reboot, and reinstall the product (with the SMTP provider enabled)... :-\

Thanks

I uninstalled the software, rebooted, and followed the instructions in the last post, but I still get the same problem?

I am not sure what the difference is now, but all seems to be fine. I guess I was not patient enough after the re-install.

Thanks for your help!
