How do you know you may be infected with a virus?

Symptoms may be:

- unexplained messages or images appear all of a sudden

- unusual sounds or music is being played when not expected

- your CD-ROM drive opens and closes mysteriously

- programs start suddenly

- your firewall alerts you that some appl wants to connect to the Internet

- your friends mention they have had messages, which you did not send

- your mailbox contains a lot of messages without a sender's e-mail address

Secondary symptons could  be:

- your computer halts or freezes or encounters errors

- your computer slows down when programs are started

- files and folders have been deleted or emptied or changed

- your harddrive is accessed too often

- Microsoft Internet Explorer freezes or functions erratically or you cannot      close the application running

If someone knows more please add to this listing.
It is not complete.
