how to add an exception for garmin express
« on: May 28, 2016, 06:50:28 PM »
Hi there /i am trying to update my sat nav using garmin express.
I keep getting an error message and it was suggested that adding an exception for Garmin Express to Avast might resolve the issue
I tried turning off the firewall for ten minutes but this did not work
Can anyone please explain how I add an exception for Garmin Express please
Many thanks
Laura

Strange, I use a TomTom SatNav and that updates just fine. I can only assume that they use similar methods of updating.

Laura106, have you tried downloading the latest Express version and installing over the top?

Download and run the Express installer and it will install directly over the top of your current version.

Installing on top = Installing a new(er) version in the same folder as the existing version is installed in without removing the currently installed version first.

Hi, thanks for the suggestions. I tried that and I still have the message. This is becoming a bit problem as I cannot use the sat nav as when I tried today it had me half a kilometer away from where I was driving through fields since I tried resetting it. Is there an answer please to my first question. How do I add Avast as an exception ? I would still like to try this to see if it works. Laura

I can't see how the SatNav showing you are 1/2 a kilometre off where you are could be related to avast, even if it were blocking it when you trying to update your SatNav.

Having disabled the firewall without any difference, would tend to support it isn't the firewall, that leaves the Web Shield and or the File System Shield. The Web Shield being the more likely of the two, but if it was that then I would expect to see an alert or interactive window from avast.

Trying to pinpoint the file that is responsible for the update is what you need to find, then you could add that file name and its location to the File System Shield and add the URL (it connects) to the Web Shield exclusions.

In your firewall settings, which setting do you have it set to, if it is too rigorous it could block (but as you said disabling didn't work) ?

Thanks for all the suggestions
I did get to the bottom of it thanks to another post
I use windows 10 and this does not seem to be compatible with Garmin. I set it to run as if it was windows 8 and it worked like a charm so its all fixed now. So it was a garmin problem all along

You're welcome.

Thank you for reporting the issue, it could well help others.

Though it is a little strange as bob3160 also uses win10 - perhaps a slightly different Garmin version.
