To answer your first question, yes the pop ups and unwanted tabs occur with IE (edge).

I have "Reset Microsoft Edge Through the settings"
once rebooted.

on the Chrome side, yes there are still pop ups and unwanted new tabs.
And on the IE Edge, darn yes still present.

Would you like me to continue with the System File Checker method? (method 2 from HowToGeek?)

I suspect the virus was originated in an Edge browser, as the primary user of this laptop uses IE.

Firefox is not even used/installed.

I ran the SFC  Scannow:

Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

Do you have any other computers using you router that have the same problem ?

Try open DNS and see if that stops it

Hello,
I have other computers running on the same network modem.
No issues with those laptop and PC, even with Chrome or IE or FireFox.

It is only this laptop, which my co-user states that uses IE and has unwanted popups.

I have tried to run OpenDNS,
I received the Green Thumbs UP:
"You've successfully configured your device to use our DNS nameservers."

I sadly still receive unwanted popups.

OK we will now reinstall Edge and then reset Chrome to new

CAUTION : This fix is only valid for this specific machine, using it on another may break your computer

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

Quote
CreateRestorePoint:
C:\Users\Ryan\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge

Save this as fixlist.txt, in the same location as FRST.exe

Run FRST and press Fix
On completion a log will be generated please post that

THEN

Click Start and in the search box and type powershell

Right click the top option (powershell.exe) and select run as administrator

In the box that opens copy and paste the following command :

Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers -Name Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml” -Verbose}

It should autorun, if not then press enter

NEXT

Re-install Chrome

1. If you have bookmarks, let's save them by exporting them - Export Bookmarks
2. Go into the dashboard. Log in. https://www.google.com/settings/dashboard?hl=en
3. Scroll down to “Chrome Sync” and click Stop sync and delete data from Google link“
4. Click Stop sync and delete data from Google button
5. Now we need to uninstall chrome.
Note: When asked about user data or settings you must remove this also so please check the box.
6. Restart the computer and reinstall chrome, You can download The latest version from here - Google Chrome
7. Import your bookmarks back into Chrome
8. Sign back in to your Chrome browser so that your bookmarks sync with your online account.

Hello again,
attached is the new fixlog.

The tricky part was the Powershell step, as I did not know how to copy and paste...but it worked out.

At the Chrome Sync step, I did not have any activity, so I basically skipped this step.

I uninstalled Chrome via the right-click start / control panel.
Reinstalled Chrome,
now i am here.  No issues after 10mins.

I still suspect that the problem originated in IE Edge.
The main user of this laptop is only an Edge user.
I will keep you posted either way.

Cheers.

Well the reinstall of chrome seems sufficient.

Do think resetting Edge was successful?

Would you like me to run delfix? to conclude this episode.
Post instructions again please.

Yes as the initial FRST fix was to remove the Edge folder and associated bits

Then the powershell commands reinstalled it

Well I am ready to close this chapter.
There is a very content forum user here, thank you.

Is there a way to determine the source of my problem?
That is, what site was the culprit?
Thank you.
