All in all, I'm very disappointed in the support offered by Avast and this forum.
Please note that nobody from Avast replied here.
Feel free to contact official support: https://support.avast.com/support/tickets/new

Actually, I called their support number on the phone.  They wouldn't talk to me, because I wasn't the owner of the computer.

That is not avast what you called but a third party (as has been explained on this webboard many times).

GrimeFighter changes the boot.ini file so it will load GrimeFighter and not Windows.
Undo the change and Windows should boot again.

- Boot from a live cd/dvd/usb
- Open the boot.ini file
- Change the content
- Save the changes
- Reboot the system (don't forget to remove the cd/dvd/usb)

BTW... There IS no boot.ini in Windows 8...

Well, fix/restore the boot-loader.
If that doesn't fix it, perform a in-place-repair of Windows.
