Nice to have another update but it's a shame that Remote Assistance is gone because i used it
to help my mother with her computer troubles :'(
Maybe time to move to TeamViewer :)

I'm not sure about monthly release cycles.
Each month we will see new/improved features. There are exciting things being baked.
The goal is very high and internal team are working with a much shorter release time (and maybe also beta cycle will follow this faster ring).
In fact, for the olders, do you remember the time that we need longer cycles at Avast?
Right now, how many of us have "critical" issues with Avast?
I remember my last one on version 6.
Now we are quite mature on version 12.

And you, RejZor, you will be surprised too ;D

I'd use Remote Assistance, but every time I tried it, it never worked. All I got back was mouse pointer and black screen. I've reported it here and got no real response for it so I just stopped using it entirely and fallen back to old over the phone click by click guidance...

I am also extremely unhappy that in this new version of Avast "Remote Assistance" was removed.

I used this particular feature quite often to provide general computer support for 2 of my elderly aunts both in their 70's who often just need help with very basic computer things.

They both live quite some distance away from me so it wasn't just as case of walking over to their houses to sort things out and I found the Remote Assistance
feature invaluble in enabling me to sort things out for them.

Really sucks that this useful feature has been taken out :(

Yes it is time to move Windows Defender..
This CyberCapture will be like Evo-gen.. Release it then stopped it...then again start it and now..it is disappeared.

I hope CyberCapture feature will show results. I also hope it is far more extended file analyzer than NG was. I mean, I hope there is also enhanced static analysis involved, analyzing what file is as a whole, not just its behavior as a program. I hope it actually feeds the apps to their entire file sorting and classification system along with virtualized analysis. That should boost actual protection level.

We also stopped using the year in product name, as we will be releasing new versions in monthly cycles from now.
Hi MartinZ,

In avast account the new version is displayed as Avast 2017 (12.1.2272), need to be fixed  ;)

So will these silent monthly updates require a restart or not?

Updated thru the GUI with no problems, other than my usual check in Tools and in the Control Panel's Programs and Features/Change to double-check that no unwanted extras had been added.

One nice change this time around (for which thanks, Martin and all) was that the update finally no longer adds a desktop icon-shortcut which I invariably deleted as unnecessary since avast starts with Win anyway.  :)

Not a big fan of monthly updates. Too much of a possibility of bugs in fast releases .. Please stick to a more reasonable
update schedule, say quarterly or bi yearly.

Actually, fast small updates are less prone to mistakes and problems. If you have to make huge updates that involve tons of changes at once before release, a lot can go wrong and it's hard to debug since so many changes have been done. But if you update program regularly and each time focus on one thing only, you're not only less likely to break something else, in case something does break you'll know what to look at and reverse to fix it. Maybe it doesn't make sense at first, but if you think about it, it does make sense. It's why Chrome, Opera and Firefox have gone with such update cycles as well.

Program updates, most likely, will always require a reboot, after all, this is Windows world :)

It depends. A lot of program functions have already been moved to VPS updates. Basically everything under the hood that doesn't involve changes to the drivers can be done via VPS. For GUI and more advanced things, the still have to issue a classic program update. Maybe they changed this further to require even less system restarts...

The update went successfully thru the GUI. (Windows 10 pro, 64 bit), fast, no problem, one restart.
It destroyed  Malwarebytes' anti-ransomware program.
