Hello,

I need some help since this "Nitro" aka slowdown update Avast is eating constantly at least 25% of the CPU basically hogging down my whole laptop can't play can't do anything at acceptable framerates. In addition Avast kills streaming services that use p2p video distribution (www.telekomtv.ro) for instance.
Did anyone see this behavior what can i do?
I have an "Avast Internet Security" license: The avast version is 12.1.2272.

Thanks,

Jozsef!

https://telekomtv.ro/ it's up the provider disconnects me if i don't redistribute via p2p.

I don't mind this issue since i just disable avast since disabling it's pretty firewall component does not work.

How to get rid of the ridiculous CPU usage? I mean it's crippling... it's worse then at work when McAfee does it's thing but at least after 2 hours it leaves me be. This 25% usage has been going on for days and can't get rid of it? Which Avast "component" is doing this? It's unacceptable, in case ppl were wondering what antique computer i have:
15 480M @ 2.66
8 Gb of RAM
500 Disk
and HD5650 still the CPU load is unjustifiable!

You also have McAfee? ???
Remove it:

He has McAfee at work, what he wants to know is how to turn off Nitro which is eating up his laptops resources. I would think it is something that could be turned off in the program itself, since I do not have that build version I have no idea on where it is to turn it off.

I just want to know what is causing this and what to turn off until it's fixed:
Passwords
Sandbox
Software Updater
Browser Cleanup
Cleanup
Secure Line VPN
Rescue Disk
Home Network Security
Firewall?

It just feels like Avast is doing bitcoin mining ... I want a confirmation if it's a bug or not? Also it won't show up in task manager unless you click on:Show processes from all users.
Thanks jowolf359 for clarifying!

Well yeah if this does not work which is the latest stable version? Since i did not check when it updated and from what, Thanks...

That's actually not true. The latest version is significantly smaller, especially when installed because it has no NG tech anymore. What contributes to size the most are virus detection signatures. Trust me, you want those. There is no way bypassing that or optimizing it beyond possible.

Passwords
Software Updater
Browser Cleanup
Cleanup
Secure Line VPN
Home Network Security

These can cause Avast to become a resource hog, I have turned off Browser Cleanup, Software Updater, Secureline VPN, and CleanUp. I hope this helps.

Home Network Security is a scan. It will only use resources if you run it. Secure Line VPN is a paid product, only uses resources it used. If you didn't purchase a licenses you only have a very limited trial. Passwords is a good PW manager. If you're already using LastPass or something else, you don't need it.

Thanks Everyone for the help. I disabled the following services:
- Passwords
- Software Updater
- Browser Cleanup
- Cleanup

Now it stays under 3% average CPU usage in the performance monitor.
If a developer needs help or information they can notify me. To be honest i considered the Software Updater usefull. As a clean up manager i have Tune Up! Utilities from the Vaio Software Suite.

I would suggest that you just delete Cleanup and see if your performance is still exceptable.

All these things being added to Avast over the years is what made me move away. If you just choose the 3 shields in a custom install, you won't have any resource problems and you will have full protection. Actually, it's debatable whether the mail shield is really necessary. You can choose the browser protection too if you want but in my opinion, it's not worth much. The File shield and Web shield are the only fully essential components.
