Avast Removed by Local PC Shop after a Free PC Tune Up
« on: July 01, 2016, 03:06:13 PM »
Hi All

Wanted to clean up PC, so saw a local business around here doing Free PC Tune ups, well shop removed Avast and enabled Defender for protection, stated it offers same protection as Avast does, and also stated i'd have a smoother upgrade to Anniversary update when it comes out for Windows 10?   I'm betting his statements were false, though I could be wrong.    Should I just disable Defender, restart, and make sure still disabled, and reinstall Avast, and not be too scared of any upcoming possibly issues with Anniversary update install

Maybe already know my answer, but figured i'd ask just to be sure

Yes. Further, I strongly suggest to stay away from this shop...!!

You are correct, that shop is completely wrong.
Even the free avast version offers more protection than MS-Defender.
avast wil have no problem with the coming update for Windows 10.

Look it up...
Does MS-Defender has.. ?
- FileShield
- Webshield
- Mailshield
- CyberCapture
- SafeZone browser with pay-mode
etc...
I think you already know the answer ;)

When I had my computer service shop, I've seen many of those shops.
None of them existed long.

A huge clue about that shop is that they have enough time to offer free cleanup's.
It means they don't have enough customers to fill their time.
Not surprisingly ofcourse if they say Defender is better than avast  ;)
If you want to have a laugh, go back to them and ask them what CyberCapture or a SafeZone Browser is.
It would not surprise me they don't even know.

Not to mention, they could also have installed some unwanted stuff...

Yeah will fix this up shortly here, not going back to shops, will do my own Tune up, Power supply upgrade in the future, video card upgrade, Plus shop just came affiliated with another local shop, so definitely not enough business lol I do think for them.

Checked system with malwarebyes already--nothing found, so thinking just disable Defender soon fully, reinstall/reconfig Avast, and good

No need to disable Defender. It will turn itself OFF as soon as you install Avast. :)

I Disabled it just to be safe anyways,  Avast running well now, and think all prepared for Windows 10 upcoming upgrade at end of month or early August whenever that is lol.

Thanks everyone so much for the replies on this matter

Just some general, loosely-related advice: Get a full print out of what components are in your computer so you know what you have before you take a computer to a shop. I've heard stories of unscrupulous people replacing quality components with lesser quality components. There are plenty of free programs that will list what is on your computer. Personally i'd recommend Belarc Advisor. It also lists a lot of useful information such as the Windows operating system id. It also checks for missing and/or corrupted Windows updates. This is particularly useful for XP users.

A better bit of advice would be to make sure you've created an image backup of your HD on an external device before you take your computer to the shop.
When possible, it's also better to have a trusted friend work on your systems that a shop you don't really know thru personal experience.
