configuring two pop mail accounts
« on: December 07, 2003, 08:45:09 AM »
Hi there

Thanks for ur free antivirus software "Avast!" :)

I have win xp professional installed. i just downloaded avast yesterday.

im using opera as my browser and for my pop accounts.

I have 2 accounts setup in opera.
1. Dishnetdsl pop3 mail
2. Yahoo pop3 mail.
Both the accounts are working fine.

I use the following mail servers

for Dishnetdsl
POP3 : pop3.eth.net
SMTP : smtp.eth.net

for Yahoo pop3
i use YahooPOPs (software to pop mail from yahoo servers)

now i want to configure avast to check both my accounts.
But i get a error message that:  port 110 is already in use.please check the manual setting of mail protection

I have checked the avast4.ini file and found :

[MailScanner]
DefaultPopServer=pop3.eth.net
DefaultSmtpServer=smtp.eth.net
ShowTrayIcon=1
UseDefaultSmtp=0
AutoSetProtection=0

Now please help me scan both my mail accounts.

No way, Jose...
 I'm sorry Ash, but you have to decide which one of the two you want to act as your local-host: Avast! or Yahoopops.
Since both of them act as a localhost , using 127.0.0.1 as pop-collector, one of the two is being denied acces.
The choice is yours.

Sorry, but that's the way it is.

Kind regards,  Fast

I was thinking over your problem.
I had the same experience as well and decided to give up on Yahoopops because of the fact that Yahoo!mail nowadays is being scanned before it is being adressed to the user by Norton.
Now  the only problem that I have is that I have to acces my Yahoo! mail account via webmail.
But on the other hand I think it's better to have Avast! scan my other popmail account's.
As long as you don't use the Yahoo!pops program, you can set up as many pop-accounts as you like and have them all scanned by Avast!

Just a thought...

Bye

You seem to be right... The user can configure avast! + a spam application at 127.0.0.1 or localhost (for instance, Spamihilator or SpamPal). The configuration will be double:

For Spamihilator at POP3: 127.0.0.1&username#pop3server
and at SMTP authentication: #smtpserver

The ports used by your XP can be found with a Port Scanner like:
PortPeeker or OpenPorts. I suggest, TCPView, which enumerates all active TCP and UDP endpoints, resolving all IP addresses to their domain name versions. Shows Ports numbers. On Windows XP, TCPView shows the name of the process that owns each endpoint. Endpoints that change state from one update to the next are highlighted in yellow; those that are deleted are shown in red, and new endpoints are shown in green.

The default port numbers are 25 for SMTP, 110 for POP3 and 143 for IMAP. You can set both Opera and Yahoo to use another (but the same) port for e-mail check.

In avast4.ini file, for instance:

[MailScanner]
DefaultSmtpServer=smtpaddress
DefaultPopServer=pop3address
SmtpListen=127.0.0.1:25
PopListen=127.0.0.1:110
ImapListen=127.0.0.1:143
ShowTrayIcon=1
AutoSetProtection=1
UseDefaultSmtp=0
Log=1

And in Opera, probably in the details of the accounts, you will be able to set the pop3 port for 120. I use port 120 both in Outlook Express and Spamihilator and 110 for avast!

Could you make some tests?

Hi tech

ok check this

[MailScanner]
DefaultPopServer=pop3.eth.net
DefaultSmtpServer=smtp.eth.net
ShowTrayIcon=1
UseDefaultSmtp=0
AutoSetProtection=1
Log=1

now i have
yahoopops on port 6000(pop3) and 6001(smtp)

I CANT change pop3 server for my dishnetdsl account.
i think it does not work with my isp(dishnetdsl).
(pop3=110 & smtp=25)

my outgoing mail via
yahoo account is scanned
dishnet account is NOT scanned

my incoming mails thru both accounts are NOT scanned.

got any more ideas?

bye.

Maybe you can make some tests on avast4.ini file;

DefaultPopServer=pop3.eth.net:6000
DefaultSmtpServer=smtp.eth.net:6001
SmtpListen=127.0.0.1:6001
PopListen=127.0.0.1:6000
ImapListen=127.0.0.1:143

Hope you can get it... like me  :'(
