This is something that needs to be dealt with on a more general level, because there are only about 1/2 dozen executable file formats and the rest of them are data files that various programs use.
The problem? I was downloading an archive from an E-Mule type program that had midi and sound font (sf2) files. When archive files are downloaded, they go into a temp file. Avast was going in, identifying them as viruses and DELETING THEM! This wreaked havoc and caused the program to malfunction by gobbling up all available memory and taking my system down with it! At first I thought it this was a real threat, but then I realized these were data files, so I turned off the real time protection and re-downloaded the archive. I opened them right up, and sure enough - happy drumming! Unfortunately, there is no way of submitting file types to Avast, only software. As of now, I have the real-time protection turned off, which is fine because Ad-Aware (which doesn't have this problem) is taking care of it.
Is there a way to tell Avast to scan only known executables, like com, exe, bat, dll etc.... or whitelist a FILETYPE?? Did I miss something?
