Can't start Avast, Windows Defender, Task Manager
« on: July 15, 2016, 08:30:16 PM »
Because I was having a problem starting Word, I discovered I can't start my Avast, or Windows Defender, Task Manager, or Updates.  I tried to install Windows Malicious Software (msert) but it won't open.  I'm running Windows 10.  I get a message: "The system did not respond to the control function in a timely manner".  Other functions such as email and Mozilla are still working.  Any solutions will be welcome.

Yes, I have already tried to install Malwarebytes, and their other program: Chameleon.  When I try to run them I get this message: "Shell Execute Ex failed code: 1053. The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely manner."  This the same message I get when I try to start Avast, or Windows Defender.

Proceed with Farbar.

Along with the FRST scan logs (FRST.txt and Addition.txt) can you provide the following?  This is a different scanner that looks more at the services in Windows.

Please download Farbar Service Scanner to your desktop and double click on the file to run it.
  • Make sure the following options are checked:
    • Internet Services
    • Windows Firewall
    • System Restore
    • Security Center
    • Windows Update
    • Windows Defender
    • Other Services
  • Press "Scan".
  • It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
  • Please copy and paste the log to your reply.
(NOTE: don't worry about putting all these tools on the desktop; we will remove them when we are finished.)
