cmak in program files after windows update?
« on: July 19, 2016, 02:51:15 PM »
so after a windows update ive noticed that i now have a folder named cmak in both program files and program files (x86). From a google search cmak is "The Connection Manager Administration Kit (CMAK) is a tool that you can use to customize the remote connection experience for users on your network " it seems like a microsoft program that downloaded with the windows updates and i was wondering how do i uninstall it.

cmak is part of the Intel driver and software update utility ( not part of Windows updates ), Intel update utility should be listed in your Programs and Features but you'll still have to manually delete the leftover cmak files after uninstalling.

well i dont have an Intel update utility installed and the cmak folders creation date is the exact same time as the windows updates on the 13th of july. ive even uploaded the cmak.exe.mui which was in the foulder to virus total and it is signed by microsoft
https://virustotal.com/en/file/e8bfe65cd8a32254e327552748b64ba056a6d36e426664cc410d102cfe100d1f/analysis/1468932794/

i cant delete the folders ether as in both cmak.exe.mui says i need permission from "trusted installer" to delete the file.

It's possible the files are used by some other program I guess, cmak turned up for me a couple of days ago when I used the Intel update utility to search for new INF chipset drivers.

After uninstalling the utility I removed the cmak file leftovers which you need to take ownership of to remove.

You can add the take ownership script to your context menu by downloading and installing the script here http://www.askvg.com/add-take-ownership-option-in-file-folder-context-menu-in-windows-vista/

This is definitely something to do with Win 10 update, as it is now the latter part of July, the OP posted mid July, I also had an update and just noticed the folder as well. Nothing to worry about, just "residue". Doesn't take up any real space. Windows loves to leave stuff behind.

A question to ask Microsoft. :)
It was installed on 7/23/2016 on my system so I deduce that it may have something to do with the upcoming Redstone update.

I should have phrased my reply better. It was downloaded onto my system on 7/23/2016.
It was not installed just as on your system the files including the .msi are still in the downloaded folder.

you need to take ownership away from trusted installer first and switch it to your normal everyday account before you can do anything with it
