VPN connected, but location is not hidden
« on: July 24, 2016, 04:02:08 PM »
Hi there,

I am using Avast SecureLine VPN with Windows 10.
Although the connection reports to be established, many sites and programs still know where I am.
For instance, I am in the Netherlands, but currently I am connected to Madrid via Avast SecureLine VPN. But:

- google.com redirects me to google.nl

- Netflix shows me the Dutch offers

- Weirdly, https://ipcim.com/en/?p=where indicates that I am in New York -- indeed, I WAS connected to New York via VPN last time I tried, but now even refreshing that page doesn't change the result

So all indicates that the VPN does not work correctly when Google and Netflix do know my real location, and where-am-I indicates still something else.

Any ideas what might be going on?
Thanks in advance!

A VPN is not about hiding your location.
It is about encrypting the data stream between you and the endpoint.

Hi Sebastian,

Google and Netflix also use cookies to track users, so they are making an educated guess as to your location based on prior usage.

Hope this helps explain why this is happening.

Best regards,
