I'm having a problem removing Avast completely. A few months ago, I uninstalled it via the Windows 7 control panel. Recently I updated to Windows 10, and today I got a popup message from the Avast upgrade utility, which was a surprise since I thought it was uninstalled.
I did some searching and found & downloaded the Avast uninstall utility here:
https://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility I ran it and followed the prompts to boot into safe mode. (It was definitely safe mode. Everything was huge, and it said "safe mode" on the screen.) It seemed to complete without errors, and prompted me to reboot. It did gave a message that some components might not be gone until a second reboot, but that didn't look like an error.
After that I got stuck booting into safe mode endlessly. I managed to get back into proper Windows by editing the boot tab in msconfig.
However, after I booted back into normal Windows, I immediately got the "Complete Windows 10 update" popup from the Avast upgrade utility.
Also, when I look at msconfig, Avast Clear Uninstall is still listed as my default OS. I tried deleting it, but it came back.
How do I get rid of this software? Any help would be much appreciated.
