That happens to me from time to time when updating Avast Free on Windows XP Pro SP3 ... it usually resolves itself
after one or two reboots.
Dell Dimension 8200 P4 1.8Ghz Windows XP PRO SP3
Avast Free Antivirus 18.8.2356
Toshiba Satellite C855-S5347 Celeron B830 1.8Ghz
Windows 10 Home 64 Bit Version 1909 Build 18363.900
Avast Free Antivirus 20.4.2410 Build 20.4.5312.578

It's happening a lot and no amount of reboots, repairs or reinstalls are making any difference. Some other threads on this:

I am having this same problem.

I have a big issue with this latest release:
The status of Avast is: your system is unprotected; the background service is not active.

Pressing the button to solve all doesn't work. I have re-installed Avast twice, but no result.

Avast is quite unresponsive as well.

I think this is some kind of bug.

(system is W10 64-bit; avast build: 12.2.3126.2)

I can confirm that several reboots doesn't solve the issue

...nor do repair installs.

Wow. Total mess of things on a Friday night.

Avast is pulling a McAfee

If I want to update Avast, I see this: built in the year 1970...

This version is completely dysfunctional, and does not recognize license, load virus files, etc.  I would go back to prior version if I could.  After uninstalling, re-enabled Windows Defender for now...

Other issues with the latest version:

Smart Scan hangs at 6% while scanning for viruses
Virus Definition and Program updates hang and never finish

Please fix these issues.

I'm having the same problem.  I've spent several hours already trying to make this work following the update.

I'm seriously considering moving on to something else.  I've been using Avast for around 10 years with several Avast Internet Security licenses, but it is getting to be too much of a pain to just make updates to the program.

1.  Avast won't activate
2.  Firewall won't activate.
3.  Updated program dropped my license from the previous ***72 version, but won't accept the license on the ***76 version.

Here's what I have tried so far.
1st try...installation over the old version.
2nd try...reinstall the program following running Avastclear
3rd try...uninstall using Revouninstaller; cleaning with CCleaner; running Avastclear and then reinstall.

All had the same results.   I don't have time to fiddle with this for several computers.

Not sure what happens with this new version. I do not come to this forum generally, but found it the only way to ask.
Made update/upgrade tonight, and avast does not want to recognise me. No viral database recognised (and do not want to update even if I try), says that I am in version 12.2.2276, publication date 1970 !!
I did nothing more than last updates, just pressed "upgrade" when was prompted for.
Avast says that my system is not protected, but when I try to resolve, says that doing this will disable everything. How can disable something that seems already disabled ?
I am not an expert, I liked avast because was easy to use.
Is there a bug in this version ?? If so, how can I donwngrade ?
Antivirus is CRITICAL, how can we solve ? reading previos messages, I am not the only one. Do you test before going live ?

I can confirm that:

1)UI pops up randomly (REALLY ANNOYING)
2)Sometimes, avast service just won't start, making avast pretty much useless, a reboots fixes it, but another reboot and it will come back again. (ABOLUTELY CRITICAL)
