Unable to start scan error message

Every time I try to run a scan for virus I keep getting this error message "Unable to start scan.  The IOCTL call made by the application is not correct"

Repair Avast:
Control Panel> Program and Features (Add/remove program)>Select Avast> Select Repair. Reboot when completed
