Avast 4 home update problems
« on: January 14, 2006, 06:59:02 PM »
Hi,

Ive been using Avast home for about 6 months now, and it has not failed to impress until recently.

As of December, my copy of Avast will not update any of the database or program. I get this message when the program tries to auto update, as well as when i manually try to update the iAVS

Information about current update:
Last encountered error: Can't select any server for downloading (from 0).

Total time: 4 s

Any ideas as to why this has happened all of a sudden? Also I have no idea on how to correct the problem so any solution would be appreciated.

Peace out

Quronos

What is your firewall?
Check and ensure that avast.setup is allowed internet access.

A program update could have made changes that your firewall say and asked permission which you may have quickly clicked No and inadvertantly blocked.

If not the above, another thought, the servers.def file could be corrupt or empty,  try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow. You need to be on-line to do this.

i tried to click "change/remove" nothing happens...a window opens and closes so fast...is this a virus that attacked the AVAST software?

Im using a windows XP firewall. I will check the allow list in a bit, but I think the problem is more complicated.

Well:
1. You need to be connected to Internet to do so.
2. If your installation is seriously damaged, the better will be uninstalling and installing again rather then the repair procedure.
3. Are you running only the English version of avast? Did you downgrade from Pro to Home version? Did you use the Trial version?

@ Quronos
Windows XP's firewall is almost worse than useless (but better than no firewall), it lulls you into a false sense of protection, it doesn't provide outbound protection. So anything that penetrates your defenses can connect to the internet and transfer data (sensitive or otherwise) or download more of the same.

Whilst the windows XP firewall is usually good at keeping your ports stealthed (hidden) it provides no outbound protection and you should consider a third party firewall. Zone Alarm free works well with avast and has a reasonably friendly user interface. There are other free firewalls such as Kerio a google search for free firewall should return more info, etc.

Have you tried the avast repair yet?

@ kuyajoy
Unless your error is identical to Quronos, the bit about 'downloading (from 0)' and you are using windows XP firewall, you may well have other issues also as the Add Remove Programs window shouldn't dissappear when you click Change/Remove. Rather it should show other options or in the case of other program (unlike avast), it should confirm you want to uninstall.
So it would appear there is something wrong with windows, I have no idea if this is virus related, but it isn't something I have come across before.

Thanks for the advice, I had no idea windows firewall was that bad.
Last time i used Zone alarm it really hacked me off! But maybe they've improved it, so i'll give it ago!

where is the avast repair?

OK, Ive put zone alarm on, and staright away Avast is complaining of an imcompatibility issue. The updates still refuse to find the server.

There is another thread like this somewhere, where a guy has given a link to a file that should stop this update problem, but my browser says its having none of it even if i save target as.

You won't regret if you compare it to Windows SP2 firewall.

where is the avast repair?
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair). You must be connected to the internet while repairing.

OK, Ive put zone alarm on, and staright away Avast is complaining of an imcompatibility issue. The updates still refuse to find the server.
Check this link http://www.avast.com/eng/webshield_issues.html

avast! Web Shield compatibility dialogue - Install/Update Question - YES or NO

If you are using ZoneAlarm Free you should click NO, because privacy features are not present in ZoneAlarm Free this will not turn off webshield transparent mode proxy.
Use a text editor and edit the avast4.ini file, the default installation location is C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\avast4.ini (I would advise you copy avast4.ini before editing it, just in case).
Locate the line containing ZoneAlarmCompatibility= and delete that line.  Save the edited avast4.ini file.

If you are using ZoneAlarm Pro and Privacy Control in ZoneAlarm is set to High and if you click YES in avast comptability dialog box the transparent mode proxy in webshield will be turned off you have to manually configure browser to access internet. To manually configure your browser watch instructional video.

OK well thanks for the zone alarm help, but i am still stuck with my original problem.

Cant update.

ive tried to repair as suggested and advised above, but the pop up box that should appear does not.

I think at this point, i might just re-install.
