Turn off popup ads for Avast products
« on: August 30, 2016, 08:08:11 PM »
I get an ad to renew Cleanup every time I turn the computer on.  How do I get rid of this crap before I decide to get rid of Avast?

Remove CleanUp from the components and disable the (promotional) adds for avast products in the settings (paid versions only).

Click to uninstall Avast, then click Change and untick any features you don't want.

If the promotional popups can't be disabled in the free version then wouldn't it be fair to label Avast free adware? It is a program feeding you unwanted adverts that you can't suppressed.

Strange as it may sound to many people, but it is not adware.
By installing avast free, you agree that avast can show promotional ads for other (paid) avast products.

Not exactly the same, but just as a example...
It is kinda like a game that has a free version and a paid version.
In the free version you can only play the first 3 levels, while the paid version gives you 15 levels.
After you have finished the first 3 levels you get to see a message that in order to unlock the next level, you need to buy the game.

But if that game caused system wide pop-ups that could not be disabled would anyone have any problem calling it shady? Why don't these rules apply to free antiviruses like avast?

@OverHaze, Advertising in free products for their paid solutions is common with most software's, if you don't want the ads then purchase a paid version or find a software that doesn't advertise.

We've also been over this exact subject before https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=167446.msg1216437 so why bother to bring it up again.

If the adverts where confined to the programs UI I would agree with you its the popups that are the problem. And its worth bring up because Avast and other free antiviruses are security software that are using PUP tactics to make money. This is something that should be discussed.

It has frequently been discussed in these forums, but avast haven't changed to only UI ads, which it used to be a couple of years ago.

Personally as an avast free user (for over 12 years) I don't have a problem with the popup ads as it doesn't take much to close it and they really aren't that frequent. Some may find that they get more in the initial few months of using avast.

POP UP ADS are most certainly not PUPs (potentially unwanted programs) as nothing is installed.
Windows 10 Home 64bit/ Acer Aspire F15/ Intel Core i5 7200U 2.5GHz, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD/ avast! free 24.2.6105 (build 24.2.8918.824) UI 1.0.799/ Firefox, uBlock Origin, uMatrix/ MailWasher Pro/ Avast! Mobile Security

Buy the product to avoid this. They aren't in business to make you happy but to make a profit.
If you don't buy the product than you either put up with the ads or, find something that can survive without any income.

You had an answer from an Avast team member back in 2015 where you first asked all this https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=167446.msg1216774 I've also pasted the reply below.

Let me ask this. If any other software popped up adverts and upgrade nags daily the way Avast and other free AVs do would anyone have issue calling it adware? Would anyone consider it acceptable?

No one is calling anything adware.

I personally purchase a license whenever I download free apps from app stores (Google Play mostly, or iTunes) specifically to get rid of ads - their free version is quite adequate in most cases, but I do dislike nag screens or banner ads placed randomly on the app itself, so I simply purchase a license if only to get rid of ads.

This is just my personal opinion and preference though.

Let's stop this useless discussion.
It is plain and simple.

avast has chosen this marketing strategy.
Your options :

1] Learn to live with it.
2] Use their paid product.
3] Use something else (or nothing)
