v11.2.2262/160516-2 blocks all web, need to deactivate Web Shield

I've been struggling with what I thought was a failing network card. It turns out that if Web Shield is on, I don't get any web pages, but I do when it's off. Turning off Web Shield makes Avast goes unresponsive, which then affects all other functionality. After a couple minutes, a timeout seems to kick in and then Avast is working again.

I turned of all Main Settings in Web Shield but that didn't help. I toggled a few options and then got connectivity again, reset the options and lost the connectivity. I attempted to duplicate the settings to find the one toggle that's causing this (PUP check, https check, etc). It seems to be a combination of settings that I haven't nailed down yet.

What can I do to help find and fix this critical issue? I don't have too much time to spend randomly changing settings and waiting for an unresponsive app, I need to get work done too...

Thanks.

See instructions here  >>  https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0
Scroll down to second picture > Farbar Recovery Scan Tool < Run as instructed and attach the two diagnostic logs

See below the box you write in ... Attachments and other options

What is your firewall ?  And are you allowing Avast through it

I will get and run FRST. When I go to "http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/" I get this:

Quote
Your browser sent a request that this server could not understand.
Reason: You're speaking plain HTTP to an SSL-enabled server port.
Instead use the HTTPS scheme to access this URL, please.

So I modify the URL to https://www.bleepingcomputer.com but I get a 301 permanent redirect back to the insecure page and that message. Same in Firefox and Chrome. *sigh*  I'm wondering if some malware is now doing redirects. I'll do some scans.

[EDIT] I removed the subdomain and it worked: https://bleepingcomputer.com [/EDIT]

I'm using standard Windows Firewall, no recent changes, on a home network through a common Linksys router. Does Avast do any communications out a different port when some functionality is active??

Thanks guys!

Coming back to this many months later. I found that Avast Web Shield was blocking DNS resolution, where Skype and other apps that used IP addresses were working.

I'm very sorry for not following up with this thread at the time when concern was expressed to resolve it, but I didn't want to waste anyone else's time.

With this knowledge however, I have seen this problem come back a couple times since I initially reported this. I reported the most recent event against  today's update 160829-1.

This thread can be closed. I'll open up new threads as the issue recurs - I'm just updating this for anyone who does a related search.

I suggest that you check your firewall and make sure Avast is allowed access. No problems here accessing your links.
