No icon
« on: February 01, 2006, 04:31:00 AM »
Hi:
Just bought aVast Pro.  No icon appears in the running programs (lower right) therefore I can't update the virus recovery module. Program is running however as a process -  therefore I assume the process is running according to the task manager.  The  icon thing does appear in Win XP x64 beta but not in my Windows 2000.

    Can anybody help me??

Thanks.

Are these 2 OS's on 2 different computers or do you have a duel boot system?

Were there any other AV installed on the w2000 system if so what and how was it removed ?
Do you have any other security software that make stop changes to the registry/startup folder, etc.

Run ashDisp.exe that should display the icon on the tray as a work around, whilst the issue is resolved.

Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow. You need to be on-line to do this.
If that doesn't work try, uninstall, reboot, install, reboot.
It would probably be best to download the latest version of avast and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again. Use that when you reinstall.

I also have the same problem of icons not showing in my system tray.  I am using Windows XP Home and Internet Explorer; Avast home ver. 4.6.763.  I went to add/remove programs and ran the repair then rebooted my computer and still no icons in the system tray.  Where do I find or how do I run ashDisp.exe?

If the icons are not showing in the system tray does that mean that I am unprotected?

If you have the same problem, then you should also answer the question I asked of Marty Felker, because it is best to find the reason rather than simply replace as the condition could still exist to remove it again.

Repair rarely works in this instance so you are left with the other option I gave which I assume you didn't try ?

A windows explorer search for ashDisp.exe would have shown it to be in the C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ folder.

Thanks DavidR.  Running ashDisp.exe did the trick.  I was looking for ashDisp.exe on the website.  All is well now.

Running ashDisp.exe will only work once until you reboot, then you will need to do it again and again and again, unless you find out why it wasn't displayed (which is the preferred option) or you ensure it is added to the startup group.
