Exclusions no longer working?
« on: October 07, 2016, 08:58:16 PM »
Alright, what's this now?
To my dismay, exclusions have stopped working today.
I have a lot of projects and programs I've written for myself, meaning A: I know they're safe, but B: they're not signed or "trusted".
So fine, warn me about them if you must, but since there isn't really an "Ignore" function, which pisses me off immensely, at least let me add folders to exclusions.

Today Avast Free Antivirus started a barrage of "Virus finds".
It flagged:
- My own programs
- Various path-type files
- All kinds of regular applications/setups

And it completely ignored the exclusions I added to the General and the Active Protection/File System settings.
So I found myself having to add them to chest, in order to restore and add them to exclusions.
I also added paths (including subfolders "/*") to both the exclusion settings. But even after doing that, the stream of false positives did not end.

Can anybody suggest a solution that doesn't include venturing out looking for a better AV program that lets you actually control its behavior?
Or suggest a good free alternative known to work - it's the wading through all the BS only to discover that an AV does more harm than good that I'd rather avoid.

Edit:
Drivers, portable executables... No rhyme or reason, an over-kill flagging spree, in complete disregards to my settings.

That would require me to send samples of dozens of files to Avast, in the mere hope that some day in the future, they will come to the same conclusion as I, and at some point after that some of my files may not be falsely flagged anymore, and others still will.

That's bad enough, but it is decidedly NOT a solution to the problem that Avast currently seems to ignore my exclusion settings.

As information :

https://www.avast.com/faq.php?article=AVKB228

What OS/SP ?
What exact avast version ?
What part of avast is flagging them ?
Already performed a repair of avast ?
Already performed a clean installation of the latest avast version ?

I mean, is there a setting I've overlooked?
Has there been a forced change in one of the recent updates?

If there is no "Ignore" option upon detection, the exclusions HAVE to work, otherwise the whole thing is more of a detriment than a helpful tool.

And I don't know why I can specify "Ask; if fail: No Action" behavior in the settings. When you do that and something pops up and you close the window, Avast very well DOES take actions resulting in the file being at least blocked. But that's another issue.

Oh, pardon me:
Windows 10: Version 10.0.10586 Build 10586
PC Architecture: AMD X64
AVAST: 11.2.2262
AVAST Virus definition: 161007-2
Flagged: Mostly Win32:Gaelicum (by File System Protection)

My last repair and subsequent "clean install" (which was rather messy since, obviously, there had been a problem) is about half a year back.
I haven't re-installed it yet, I'd rather like to avoid that if there is another solution, that's why I came here to ask if there's anything about this.

Please answer our questions.

Sorry, read them too late and it took me a bit (gathering information; I tried copying information out of the virus chest, for example, which did not work. Is there a trick to it? It seems like you really should be able to copy the text from the "properties" window on a chest item, but I couldn't do it)

You are using a old version of avast.
Your Windows version is also not up-to-date.

I suggest to export the avast settings and update both.

An update and two restarts later, the problem still persisted.
But a clean install did the trick.

I am so sorry to have wasted everybody's time.
There's no way for me to delete this thread, is there?
This isn't going to be much use to anybody I guess, except for a negative example.
Sorry again for messing up posting etiquette and basic checks in the first place. I think I was just a bit flustered about the sudden break down.

Thanks to everybody who took their time

Most important thing is that the problem is solved  ;)
