Add Avast Scan Option to Context Menu (Win10)
« on: September 10, 2016, 03:59:52 PM »
Good morning.

Running Windows 10 and using free Avast for Home Use.

I often download files to the desktop rather than using Cloud services. Before opening these files I scan them with both MBAM and AVAST A/V, however, when I right click on the files, the option to scan with AVAST is not there (like it used to be with earlier versions of Windows). It only shows Windows Defender (which is disabled) as an A/V scan option.

I was wondering is there a simple way I can add AVAST to the context menu so I don't have to open the program to run a single file scan? (preferably without a registry adjustment)

Thanks in advance

Repair Avast:
1. Control Panel -> Add/Remove programs -> Avast
2. Click on 'Repair'.
3. Follow instructions.
4. Reboot.

Thanks Asyn, worked like a charm. AVAST scan icon now appears in the right click context menu.

The best way to check like this would be to upload to a multi engine online scanner, like these

www.virustotal.com  /  www.metadefender.com  /  www.jotti.org

If you see file as uploaded before, always click rescan for a fresh result

These will also give lots of additional file info if you use the additional tabs

Matadefender will unpack and list all files inside a zip with scan result for each file
On VT it is best to upload file unpacked or the additional info given will be skewed

Pondus, thanks but for the number of files I actually download (maybe less than 5 a week) I`ll keep it simple. However if it comes to the point when I have to download in volume, I`ll revisit this thread.

It is just as simple as using avast. May take a minute longer before you get The result but then it is checked by 40+ AV engines

Be aware that file you download / save to disk / access / read / open close folder ..... is already checked by avast.

Nothing I would suggest to use (except to an expert user).
It usually only brings more confusion to the party (FPs, etc..).

No more confusing than the other options mentioned. Strictly as a second opinion. I personally am quite happy to leave it all in Avast's capable hands.

If so, the topic was literally closed after Reply #3. ;)
