Hi Forum. I have two questions for you. I have just purchased a new laptop (Win 10 x64 Anniversary Edition, with 8GB RAM). I plan to run Avast! free on it.

1. Does Avast! Free play nicely with Zemana Antimalware (pro version - in realtime)? Please note I do not mean Zemana Anti-keylogger - I saw lots of posts about compatibility between that programme and Avast! when I did a forum search, but nothing about Avast! & Zemana Antimalware.

2. I understand that there is an option in Win 10 that turns off Windows Defender in realtime and allows for something called "limited periodic scanning" if you install a 3rd party AV. I'm wondering what people think about that. Would enabling that function in W/D cause any problems? Is there even any point?

Thanks. I am moving across from this Win 7 machine to Win 10, and it is quite a learning curve!

Only one way to find out, install and test

Anyway, I would go for Antivirus + Malwarebytes + MCShield

Thank-you Pondus. Yes that is an option, however I thought I'd post first to save myself some bother if there is a known conflict, especially as I'm unfamiliar with this O/S, which makes troubleshooting any issues I come across a bit more of a challenge.

I've always used and recommended MBAM, but I've recently discovered Zemana A/M and really I really like it. It's  being used in conjunction with NOD32 on Win 7 without any issues, but I don't plan to use NOD32 after my license expires or on my new laptop.

Few weeks back, I bought a new laptop with Windows 10. Though I am familiar with it, but there's still lot to learn from Windows 10 :). As per your question, I also did some experimenting with my antivirus Trend Micro and Windows Defender (with limited periodic scanning enabled). I turned it on for couple of hours, but I haven't seen any problems or issue or conflicts. I am now using Zemana Antimalware (trail version=27 days remaining) with Trend Micro and WD turned completely off (Limited scanning disabled).

I am using now Trend Micro, MBAM Free, and Zemana Antimalware. I have used SuperAntiSpyware (Lifetime license) on my previous malfunction laptop Windows 7), but I won't download it again, because I think I have used 3 license of that program (lifetime license can only be used on 3 computers). There's also SuperAntiSpyware Free, but I don't think I will not install that one on my Windows 10. I may think to buy the 3 year license for Zemana Antimalware, Zemana Antimalware is a pretty awesome antimalware.

Thank-you Staticguy. It's useful to know of your experience. I don't see any reason why it wouldn't be OK (or at least worth trying) with avast since it is OK with NOD 32, and as you've experienced, with Trend Micro & Windows Defender. I'll give it a whirl with avast and post back if there are issues for the sake of anyone else wondering.

Bob3160 - thanks, that's a really helpful link. :)

Your welcome catinahat  :). Once your NOD32 gets expired. Install Avast Free. Ask our teacher bob3160 for proper uninstallation of previous antivirus and installation a different antivirus. He has the instruction under his signatures (Successfully installing Avast). Have a good weekend  :)
