Huge Log File?
« on: September 17, 2016, 06:52:36 AM »
I have a huge log file that I found today:

C:\ProgramData\AVAST Software\Avast\Spamconf\log.txt

2GB, too large to even open in Notepad++.

So, is there a way to limit the size of this file?  Should it be auto-rotating?

See: https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=190794.0

I went over into the other post, and saw:

"Try to delete spamcatcher.conf in "c:\programdata\avast software\avast\spamconf folder"."

Which sounds like a kludgy response.  Why would I delete spamcatcher's configuration file? To disable it?  If I'm disabling it, am I disabling functionality of Avast?  If so, what functionality?

Perhaps someone from Avast can give us a more comprehensive response to this question.  I'm leaning toward removing the service that relies on this "spamcatcher" because I already have a ton of anti-spam measures within my environment already.  But it's also possible that someone wants this comprehensive protection, and just doesn't want the 2GB logs?

Answering here, or in the other post, is fine.

I used the following procedure to safely remove the entire directory (YMMV):

1) Brought up Avast Premiere user interface
2) Clicked Gear icon in upper right
3) Selected Components
4) Turned "Antispam" OFF and selected Stop Permanently
5) To make sure all of the files aren't in use, Right Click on Avast tray icon, select Avast Shields Control, Disable until my computer is restarted
6) Delete the directory:  "C:\ProgramData\AVAST Software\Avast\spamconf"
7) Once directory was completely deleted, I then restarted all of the disabled shields.

Re-enabling "all of the shields" meant that it restarted the Antispam under components, but the "spamconf" directory didn't immediately return.  Not 100% sure why?  Maybe someone a little more familiar with the application could bless this procedure for clearing out 2GB+ log files?

I have answered in the other topic, https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=190794.msg1338668#msg1338668.

But given your recent post, you have found what I surmised, you could also uninstall that element from the avastUI > Settings Components section.
