Malware--"URGENT FIREFOX UPDATE"
« on: September 16, 2016, 06:02:05 PM »
I am running Avast Pro Antivirus on Windows 10.  I use the Firefox browser. (I was unhappy with Chrome.) Last night a popup appeared saying that I downloaded (which I did not) and now needed to install firefox-patch.exe. (I think that was the filename.) I closed that. Then I maximized Firefox, and a tab had opened with "URGENT FIREFOX UPDATE" and a DOWNLOAD button. I don't remember the URL. I closed that tab.

I searched for information about this and found that this is malware that's been going around for, at least, several months. So I wonder why Avast hasn't caught it. Was I not doing something I should have?

So I ran a full system virus scan and went to bed. This morning there was no notice from Avast to tell me whether anything was found, and I can find no information about my scan within the program.

How can I find information about my scan? Why hasn't Avast caught this malware? How do I get this off my computer?

You can read the result(s) of the scan in the log files.

avast likely didn't warned you because nothing malicious was downloaded.

I suggest you have a good look at the system > https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0

Thanks. I'll do that. I did run another scan (found several things) and a boot scan (found nothing).

Can't comment without knowing the scan run and the actual results found. :)
