web shield and mail scan waiting for subsystem to start.
« on: February 04, 2006, 06:20:58 AM »
Hi
I have often found my mail scan disabled and my web-sheild.
After enabling them in admin--services
They now say waiting for a sub-system to start.

what sub-system is this??
Is this normal??

And why would my security settings be disabled?

any ideas
thanks

Squidhead, you should start the providers from avast! Resident protection control dialog - not from Control Panel / Services. Yes, both will eventually start the service ("avast! Mail Scanner" and "Avast! Web Scanner") but besides this, the provider config needs to be loaded and their status signaled to resident console and the like.

Do you have MS Outlook (not express) as your email client ?
Do you have the Outlook/Exchange provider enabled ?

If you don't have MS Outlook you don't need the Outlook/Exchnage provider enabled. The 'waiting for a sub-system to start' is usually associate with the Outlook/Exchange provider waiting for MS Outlook to start.

Hi thanks for the replies.
No i am not using MS Outlook.
I an using Outlook Express.

What I have running is as follows.

Instant messaging--Running (i sometimes use yahoo)
Network Shield---Running (i am on a stand alone PC dsl )
P2PSheild-----Running
Standard Shield ---Running
Internet Mail --Waiting for Subsystem to start.
Outlook/Exchange ---Waiting for a subsystem to start.
Web Shield--Waiting for a subsystem to start.

This doesn't seem right to me as I am thinking Web shield should be running.
And so should at least one email security option.
I am sure these services where running before.
I believe that something has disabled them and find it curious that what has been disabled are the very options that would warn of external intrusions.

Any ideas on how to repair this,
Cheers

As I said "
If you don't have MS Outlook you don't need the Outlook/Exchnage provider enabled" terminate this provider.

Outlook/Exchange ---Waiting for a subsystem to start.

Do you use any P2P programs ?
If not or you don't know what P2P is (file sharing), then I doubt that you need this running.

There shouldn't really be anything (sub system) Internet Mail and Web Shield should be waiting for. As I said "The 'waiting for a sub-system to start' is usually associate with the Outlook/Exchange provider waiting for MS Outlook to start."

Your welcome, sometimes the clean reinstall is the best and quickest option overcomes any tweaking done in the past.
