Avast Free and W10 Cumulative Updates
« on: October 12, 2016, 03:16:27 PM »
Hello, I have a W7 updated to W10 Desktop on which W10 cumulative updates fail to update on a restart. Someone told me Avast could be the cause as they had the same problem with Norton. Disabling the 3 shields enabled the download and install of the said files but on a restart the shields switch back on again and the computer is unable to carry out finalizing the updates. All other W10 updates install ok. Thanks.

Hello, I uninstalled Avast Free and SuperAntiSpyware before attempting to again install the latest W10 cumulative update but the result was the exact same procedure in failing as it it did before the uninstall of these two programs so there is something else causing the problem. I have combed Google and tried all the apparent resolves to no avail.

Hello Bob, yes, I have the latest v of Avast Free and the free v of W10 which although the update history states it did update successfully to the Anniversary v on the 29th of September (although the first attempt failed) it still failed as Winver displays the version is 14393.187.
Attempts to update further cumulative updates have failed although updates for other components have been successful.

The problem can be caused caused by a failing update from W7 to W10.

Try this :
- Disable the Windows update service (taskmanager > wuauserv)
- Find the file called DataStore.edb and renamen it to e.g. DataStore.edb.old
- Start the Windows update service
- Check for updates and see if they install (Start > Settings > Update and security > Check for Updates)

This should help clear the update process:

Hello Eddy, I could not find the .edb file but found the SoftwareDistribution one. I remember using the sequence you describe on the W7 to W10 computer before I updated it as there was a problem downloading window updates which I rectified. I ran the sequence you describe and it did not work. It also deleted the history list of files installed and failures. I take this as normal as when I did the same operation on the computer before updating to W10 it also deleted the history file then.

Hello Bob, I have made the bat file so will give that a go.

Be sure to run it as Administrator.

Hello Bob, The .bat script made no difference. Here is a reversed screen grab of the running.

Hmm, everything in the image is in English except "succesfullyà"
I've tried the batch file on a Dutch en English Windows version (in a VM) and both said "succesfull".

Give this tool a try > http://www.tweaking.com/content/page/windows_repair_all_in_one.html

If the updates still aren't working after that, I would say perform a clean installation of Windows 10.

Hello Eddy, yes, I did note the extra character and wondered why. Prior to my entries here on the forum I could not download the cumulative updates so ran the standalone installer for the last update which when I attempted to retry an install under Security and Updates the response was not "downloading" as before but "installing" although the install failed. Today I ran the standalone installer again and was told the update was already on the system. Upon again scanning for updates the result is that all is up to date.  Yesterday I did find the Datastore.edb file you mentioned and renamed it to old in conjunction with stopping and starting of the update service file in Task Manager but no response. The current hyperlink you gave me is for Tweaking.com Windows Repair. I have the paid version of that on the system and I am also on their forum but as the experienced users there did not mention the program usage I have not done so.

I originally downloaded and installed the free version of W10 a few days before the offer expired. As this situation with W10 cumulative updates is a new field for me how do I uninstall and install it again from where?
