Why Won't Files Scan?
« on: October 13, 2016, 04:17:19 AM »
After doing a complete computer scan for viruses, I am informed by avast that some files could not be scanned, and no reason is ever given. When I look at the files, I see that numerous files are not scanned. What is the point of using avast if it doesn't do the job right? All it takes to ruin the computer is for one of those files to be infected. Also, what is the point of using the Verification code here if the letters are not even legible? Here goes attempt number 5.

do you have a screenshot?   as why it cant scan should be on the message

How do I handle files that Avast can’t scan?  >  https://blog.avast.com/2014/02/28/how-do-i-handle-files-that-avast-cant-scan/

There are many reasons why a file cant be scanned and it happens to all AV, however all AV does not show it in the scan result
It does NOT mean they are infected in any way.
Also avast realtime protection will scan those files as soon as whatever use those files access them.
Avast realtime protection monitor evrything that goes on in your computer when it is on

I CAN'T contact customer service, because everything pointed me to this forum.

And what purpose is the Verification code, since it is not even legible? Also, the "Listen to the letters" feature doesn't work.

I don't understand that sentence.

I understand the intention; but since some words are not even legible, it defeats the purpose. A bot isn't going to be able t type anyway, so this site should use real letters instead of confusing everyone. It seems like complexity and confusion is the official policy of the Internet these days.

all antivirus programs have realtime protection that monitor evrything that goes on inside your computer, meaning it will detect a infection without you have to do a scan (not dormant malicious files)

Many files in the computer can be protected by the OS or the program that they belong to or it can be files you have zipped and password protected.

When avast can not scan a file, it should say why in that message

If the latest as soon as you unzip your password protected file, avast scan it (you dont see it) evry time you save, open a doc, download a file, move a file, open close a folder .... avast scan

==============================================================================
Real-time protection
Real-time protection, on-access scanning, background guard, resident shield, autoprotect, and other synonyms refer to the automatic protection provided by most antivirus, anti-spyware, and other anti-malware programs. This monitors computer systems for suspicious activity such as computer viruses, spyware, adware, and other malicious objects in 'real-time', in other words while data loaded into the computer's active memory: when inserting a CD, opening an email, or browsing the web, or when a file already on the computer is opened or executed.[97]

<snip>

1. It should give a reason, but it may not be visible, try enlarging the screen/window or expanding the column widths.

2. As has been mentioned there are many legitimate reasons a file can't be scanned and not necessarily an indication of being infected.

If something else tried to run one of those files, then the resident on-access scanning would intercept that call and scan the file. This is actually going to place a lock on the file until it is scanned, so if it couldn't be scanned then the lock would presumably still be active.
