Email Protection Settings

Hi everyone,
I'm really enjoying Avast, but I'm for lack of a better term an average computer user.  Since installing Avast, I am now having trouble with images in my email.  Images are not loading, even when I select "download pictures" in Outlook 2013.  For the safe senders for whom i have already indicated in Outlook, they automatically download images, but those are showing up as broken now.  Any ideas on what settings i should adjust in Avast to enable my images again in Outlook 2013?  Maybe it's not Avast, but that's the only thing I've done differently on this computer in the past week or so.

What OS/SP ?
What exact version of avast ?
Any other security (related) software installed ? (or was there)

Does it work if you turn off avast mail shield?
