missing files?

hello

I am using avast home 4.6.760 without any hitch but I recently used hijackthis and a portion its log shows the following:

O23 - Service: avast! Mail Scanner - Unknown owner - E:\XP OTHER PROGRAM FILES\Avast\ashMaiSv.exe" /service (file missing)
O23 - Service: avast! Web Scanner - Unknown owner - E:\XP OTHER PROGRAM FILES\Avast\ashWebSv.exe" /service (file missing)

Is this normal?

Yes, it's normal - it's a bug in HijackThis, actually.

Hi there Igor,

I knew there was something wrong somewhere......but definitely not in Avast!

I had to make sure so I searched for the so called missing Avast files in my system. They are there alright where they should be. But then, I had to re-assure myself and others who may have the same situation so I posted this query.

Thanks for your reply and to Avast which had protected my system for so long.

Ignore any 023 reference to avast processes, this is a hiccup in the HJT 1.99.1 (especially missing file entry for avast). The same seems to be the case for all 023 entries not just avast.

The latest version of avast is 4.6.763 so you might want to do a manual program update.

Thank you DavidR for the additional info

right clicked "about" on the blue icon and when it showed build 4.6.760 I did a manual program update. The prompt, after the "manual update" showed that I already had 4.6.763 but  the "about avast" still shows 4.6.760.

Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow. You need to be on-line to do this.

This has in the past brought these into line.

Your welcome, I don't know why they get out of synchronisation like that, but repair seems to bring them into line.
