Opera 9 Technology Preview 2
« on: February 08, 2006, 11:14:34 AM »
So it's time to push Firefox and Flock away and show the (old ;) ) newcomer.
It's the Opera 9 series! Yes you are right, it's still technology preview which means it may still contain bugs or glitches but in general it's working without any problems for me. And i must admit it it's the best browser i have seen to date.
It's an excellent all in one package for perfect internet experience.

New and highlighted stuff in Opera 9:
- Very fast Presto engine that finally works corectly with all pages that i visit.
- Fully resumable downloader
- Integrated e-mail client
- Intergarted IRC client (which is safer than mIRC because it doesn't support scripts)
- Integrated Bittorrent client (which is ultra fast from user reports)
- Out of the box tabbed browsing and gestures
- New "Blocked Content" feature to block annoying ad banners and other annoying content
- Full support for GMail including Atom feeds for it
- New support for extensionable objects called "Widgets" to add extra functionality to Opera
- Enhanced popup blocking and per page compatibility settings
- Still maintaining very small download size (~3MB)
- Plus much more stuff!

It's really time to "put" those two aside... I mean, what's happening with development of Flock ? Long time nothing new, nothing promissing that it will go gold in some recent future. Million bucks for development, and they are slow like snails...

I may actually finally try Opera...  ::)

"SWEET" is a good discription and it's only a Techno. Preview.
Microsoft, save your money,
I think I've found a honey. ;D ;D
This makes the latest version of IE look sick.
Of course this is only my personal opinion. :)
(By the way, their built in spell checker is also a "sweet" thing.)

I will certainly take a look at the new preview, roll on more Widgets. That is the one thing about firefox, its extensions that make it so powerful and there are some I would find hard to live without: BBCodeXtra, Cookie Culler, Translate, to name a few.

Download size for Windows is now showing 4MB, still a little less than Firefox's 5MB and I shudder to think what IE7's download size is. Just on half way (damn dial-up) through now.

Ok, BBCode isn't there but most of forums have own buttons anyway which work just fine. Translate IS included by default in Opera, as well as other stuff for selected text.
Cookie control is also there. That Cookie Culler wsn't anything special to me though...

Well I'm playing with it now and it feels strange, some things are missing or I can't find right now, so it will take a little getting used to.

I found the Translate bit, would be handy if it opened in a new tab though. I tend to use the quick reply window to reply, so BBCode is very useful in those instances. It took some time trying to find how to refresh a page only to find it was a right click option as well.

Is there an off-line help file (perhaps not with a preview version), the only thing I found was the on-line version.

I liked the way it copied the current default browsers bookmarks (many just copy IE bookmarks), I thought I might have to import them form firefox.

Yeah, some used to it time is normal for new stuff.
I type BBCode by hand in quick replys, though i'm seeing more and more forums that even have basic commands even for Quick reply.
It's almost faster than using that menu, at least for me. But that depends on user anyway...

The download for IE7 Beta2 was 11.2 MB ... a bit large, comparatively speaking.    ::)

Looks nice and seems easy to use, but ...

Memory usage is about the same as Firefox - about 30k with two tabs open - but Opera is peaking at 100% CPU usage and causing my laptop fan to blow hard whenever I refresh the pages frequently. Firefox is not making such a meal of the same action with the fan staying quiet.

Hey! I like the preview function when you hover on a tab. Definitely cool.

I've been using Opera for almost 2 years and I really enjoy it, when I update from 8.5 to 9 when I see it. It like WOW! Opera the Holy Grail.

I couldn't help myself saying goodbye Microsoft IE drop dead ;D! BUT I still used the window update only in IE and why can't Opera add a plug-in file for Window Update.

I'm always surprised that IE hasn't tried to buy out Opera or Mozilla for awhile now - is it out of pride?
