Antivirus programs update itself regularly. Having some sort of HIPS on top f it will drive you insane. If you want to be on the top of the game, AV's have to constantly adapt and update.

Me too.
Since Winpatrol hasn't really been maintained or updated in quite some time, letting me know when Avast has updated and needs permission is
about all it now does. I, at least for now, have removed Winpatrol till I see some type of update to that program.
I've used it since Windows 3.1. The new owner seems to be more interested in his new venture.  :'(

I got a WinPatrol newsletter on October 19th.  Below is an excerpt from it...

We are now looking to have a release for both WinPatrol and WinPrivacy out before end of the year. More details to follow as the updates draw near.

Since WinRansom was introduced near the end of the lifetime licensing offers, the decision to concentrate on making it viable makes business sense.

I also received that email. Mainly sparked because some of us have complained that Winpatrol has all but been abandoned since it was taken over.

Yes last update release was June 2015 given the information was posted on the WinPatrol site after that. Not too encouraging.

That said up to a point it shouldn't need masses of updates to alert to new changes to the startups, etc. Much of it could be monitoring certain areas for changes almost HIPS like monitoring.

Imo WinPatrol is still good as it is, but needs some " modernisation ".
What they for example easely could do, is to add already researched protected registery keys from WinPatrol Enterprise to WinPatrol.
