Updating Application
« on: July 21, 2017, 11:47:04 AM »
Hi There,

We have a machine that runs Autodesk and various other programs. In this case a reload is an extreme measure and I would like to avoid it.

The problem is that the Avast Endpoint Protection will not update the application. It starts and the progress bar is just blank for hours.
I have checked all the internet settings and update setiings.
I have tried the factory reset option

We have uninstalled avast and reinstalled it. We have tried in safe mode. I have tried uninstalling and using a registry cleaner. I have tried the reg cleaner in safe mode and deleting all folders I can find that are associated with Avast.

After all that after a fresh install it still will not download the updates.

Now to clarify, it does download and install the definition updates.

Its a Dell Optiplex 3020 running Windows 7 (Users autodesk software doesn't work on newer)
The Windows 7 updates are good.

So my question is this, where is the hidden setting for the updates so that I can fix it?

Perhaps it does make perfect sense to someone from avast but certainly not to me.

I do have seen quiet a lot of problems with updating (and new installations as they also check for updates) that had to do with the used DNS.
I have no clue if it will work for you or not, but change the DNS to the one from Google and try again.
If it still fails, no harm is  done and you can easy reverse the change.
If it fails, we at least have tried something and ruled something out

Thanks Eddy
I actually solved it... But first re: DNS we already point to 8.8.8.8

So for anyone out there who has a problem. download and install avastclean.exe and here is the trick. Reboot to safe mode and run it.

However the tech I took over from had it saved on the C: drive. and so that you are aware you can't run it from the C: drive in our case we had it in C:\Avast\
You must copy it to the logged in users profile %USERPROFILE%\Desktop for example.
Then it will complete the removal.

Now when I re-installed it its working.

In short, avast hasn't created a simple to use "out of the box working" removal tool and fails to give relevant info to the user. >:(

But glad to see you got it solved and I'm sure others will benefit from your feedback.
