Hi,

Hope somebody can help as I'm unable to find anybody else with the same issue online.

I have Avast Internet Security. My network connection is set as "Private" in Avast Firewall settings.

Title pretty much explains the issues I'm having. Every time I restart / shut down my laptop Avast sets my network as a "Public Network". On hovering over my wifi connection it says "No internet Secured". At this point I am unable to access the internet at all.

A workaround seems to be to disable avast then disable my wifi connection then re-enable my wifi connection then re-enable Avast - This is becoming an absolute nuisance. Sometimes I do forget to re-enable Avast meaning my system is left unprotected. Regardless, this is a terrible way for me to have to protect my system.

I've noticed that the same thing happens when I enable my VPN, I also need to follow the above steps in order to enable my VPN - Not sure if this is related.

At this point I have started searching for an alternative Antivirus software, however, I have been using Avast for roughly 16 years and would much prefer to stick with it considering I'm familiar with the interface and have paid for it.

I do hope I've given enough information here, and thanks in advance to anybody who may be able to offer any assistance.

Chris.

Perform a repair of avast.
If that doesn't solve the problem, perform a clean installation of avast and check if the problem is solved.

Repair Avast:
Control Panel> Program and Features (Add/remove program)>Select Avast> Select Repair. Reboot when completed

Hi again,

Sorry for the delayed response, been out of the country for a few weeks.

Thank you both for your replies. Unfortunately neither option made a difference.

I first attempted to repair Avast, when this didn't work I performed a clean install.

I am now left with the same issues as mentioned above, unable to use the internet or my VPN without first disabling Avast.

I have no idea what the function for setting a network connection as "Private" or "friendly" does or is even there for, as neither of these seem to make a difference to my connection - it is still treated as "Public" wifi.

Anybody have any other ideas?

Really? Nobody else have any other ideas?

I see so many threads where the response is simply "reinstall Avast" or "repair Avast" and then nothing further.

Unfortunately, it does appear that Avast has spiralled downhill over the years, I've encountered a rising number of issues with Avast over the past couple of years, reading online leads me to believe I'm not the only person frustrated with it.

I've paid for a license for this software, however, if I have to constantly disable Avast and leave my laptop vulnerable in order to connect to the internet or use a VPN service then it really isn't performing as it should do and is not worth the price of the license. The lack of support just adds to the list of problems I've found over the past few years.

It would appear that I now have to look for an alternative antivirus software, I would welcome any recommendations :)

Regards,
cto

Well, if people don't provide details we can only give some general suggestions what people can/should try to solve the problem.

What OS/SP ?
What exact version of avast ?
Any other security (related) software installed ? (or was there)
What happens if you connect with a wire ?
Is public wifi enabled or disabled in the router settings ?
etc.
