Small question ;)
« on: February 09, 2006, 06:03:34 PM »
Hello to all ;D

I have one small question  ::)

In my Windows folder I have a lot of folders like "$NtUninstallKB893756$" or "$hf_mig$"(my opinion is that these folders are some kind of temp folders when windows installs new updates, but this is only my guess), so my question is: Is it save to delete these folders? Because I have 20GB HDD and lately I don't have much space on it  :P and my Windows folder is about 2.5GB

BTW I have WinXP SP2  8)

Thanks ;D
Teodor

Well if you use NTFS filesystem, then you can compress non accessed data (like games you don't play and files that are just backap and are rarely really accessed).
I think it's worth trying. It saved loads of space for me :)

Thanks for the reply RejZor :)

I have Fat32 filesystem, I know that it's very old, but when I installed Win on my PC(that was a year ago) I've decided to stay with FAT32 and now I just don't have the time and the space to format the whole HDD  :P

Any idea about the folders  ::)

Once I've deleted folder what keeps $NtUninstallKB893756$ and similar files, and just made a backup for them. These are for updates uninstallation, if you delete it, in add remove programs list you won't see these updates and you won't be able to remove them from your PC. I tried myself, and can say what no damage was made for system. But I can't say for sure if it's really safe. I haven't noticed any consequences.  ;)

I think this one needs to stay "$hf_mig$" the others are as mentioned uninstall info for Security updates, delete them and you can't uninstall that update. So it is best to leave them for a month or two to ensure MS didn't have any bugs/features or they don't have an adverse effect. Then they can be deleted, a nice little tool is Doug Knoxes XP Remove Hotfix utility, dougknox.com http://www.dougknox.com/xp/xp_hotfixbckp_reg.htm
