Well, for default deny capability you need massive userbase so you can monitor files and build whitelist. avast! with AVG's combined userbase will be the biggest in the world with around half a billion users.

Though, if we are entirely honest here, what avast! is doing now is not Default-Deny. That would be if Hardened mode (Aggressive) was a default out of the box setting. Or when CyberCapture holds verdict for every new file no matter the source. Currently with it being limited to online only, it certainly isn't that. Comodo is pushing the "Default Deny" heavily, but it's way over their head and their arrogance and ignorance is beating them to the ground. avast! on the other hand has the resources and competence to pull it off properly.

It is always better to take the time to be sure everything works as it should. The fast track release schedule, in my view, is a sure fire way to release software with some sort of bug in it. And I hope they are continuing to support XP as a lot of computers (I have one on XP PRO SP3 and another on Win 10 Home 64 Bit) are still running XP

Now i am thinking that there should be at least some behavioral blocking rules enforced locally at the system just for exploit protection. In order for CyberCapture to be enough they should make it to kick in in all possible ways for a file to come to the system. Also an antiransomware component can benefit from it, stopping unauthorized programs from modifying your private files without consent. For example Panda distinguishes between behavioral analysis and behavioral blocking.

avast has been working on something to prevent systems from getting infected with ransomware for many months.
But they are very quiet about it so it is unknown to us users what the status/progress of it is.

Cybercapture can't kick in before a file comes to the system.
Simply because it has to be on the system to create the hash for a file.
If the file is not present, a hash can't be created and therefor not be send to avast.

And how should avast know what files are private or not?
Only way is to tell avast meaning that even if you create e.g. a draft for a letter in notepad that you want to print and send by regular mail to someone, let avast know it is a private file.
Another problem is...
What are unauthorized programs ?
Any file can be changed with e.g. notepad.
So it notepad to be considered as a unauthorized application

I don't think that is entirely correct, given that it currently only monitoring executables being downloaded from the web.

At some point a hash has to be calculated be that as it is being scanned (in a temp location) as it is downloaded and finally saved. It must be a fine line as to exactly when this has is calculated.

In a nut shell, image, music and movie files as well as document files like .doc and .pdf are considered as private documents. As I've talked about it, this could easily be done and yet avast! for some reason hasn't implemented it even though it could easily be done with everything they already have integrated inside avast! and be very effective at it.

They already have extensive whitelist, they already have HIPS which has the ability to monitor what launches what, they'd just have to add simple menu to control apps that aren't whitelisted yet and few graphics and a new popup. And that's it. Ransomware has been on the rise for months now and releasing it so late into the game, not sure how much sense does it make other than the fact they have to add it because it's a norm now to have protection for that. But they could be innovating it months ago and protecting users ahead of time...

Yes, I also run XP and am on 12.4.2280 .. I was only concerned if support for XP would continue into the future.

Technology advances. Windows XP is stagnant and has been for some time. There will be a time where
Avast, the program, will require features not supported or available on Windows XP. When that happens, XP will no longer be supported.

That in itself will not be an issue, as long as the definitions can still be updated for the final version supported for an OS .. One reason I chose Avast is because of their continuing support for XP and it is a relatively light antivirus. Now for me, I only run the AV it self. I do not bother with Safe Zone or Browser Plug Ins or use of the Avast Software Updater

That's OK. But, it should answer your question if XP is still supported.

Does the HIPS that comes in avast serve as a behavior monitor?.
Today the window appeared here.
