That is strange as it should just overwrite whatever is on the disk with a image created from that disk unless it is not a true image but just Windows repair.

Well, there is always the option to get a Windows cd/dvd and perform a clean install.

From the startup menu I managed to launch Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool, hopefully it might do something useful

Running Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool in Extended option was getting stuck on 21% for 3/4 of a day and didn't move a tiny bit further

I would simply perform
1] A hardware check
2] If 1 doesn't show any (possible) problems, perform a clean installation of Windows.

And what has that got to do with what I said ?
Perfmon is a performance monitor and does not check hardware.

Eddy please tell me how to do the hardware check, as atm I can't boot the system at all.
Regarding clean install, I insert the CD, choose install option, get to the Setup is preparing and then it hangs in that screen for ages.

Bob3160 I can't do that since the system doesn't boot at all, even in Safe Mode with command line only

You will need a bootable medium (Windows, Linux, BSD or something) with the diagnostic tools if you want to do a hardware check unless you have test equipment that can do it.

With the clean install...
- Remove any partition(s) present
- Create a new partition (or more if you want them)
- Format the partition(s)
- Install the OS on the first primary partition

used a bootable diagnostic tool to remove and re-create the partition and the installation process started, let's see how far it will go
