PUP.Optional.ASK
« on: November 14, 2016, 05:11:58 PM »
Hi, recently ran avast and malwarebytes like I always do. Avast did not find anything, but Malwarebytes detected 6 entries of "PUP.Optional.ASK" in Internet Explorer.

Just confused for a couple reasons and hoping for clarification:

- I had recently run Avast with no results the very last time I'd used the computer (11/5/16), and there had been no new installations of software by me directly. It did say in my programs file that "Adobe Flash Player 23 NPAPI and Adobe Flash Player 23 ActiveX" had been installed the same day I got this result (11/10/16).

- I never use Internet Explorer, so I don't know how anything could have gotten in there.

- Malwarebytes classifies it as "PUP" which if I am thinking correctly means it's not so much a threat as an annoyance, but then goes on to call it an "infection". Can anyone clarify if it really is a virus or if it is just a bit of harmless mildly annoying adware?

It is quarantined on my computer by Malwarebytes now.

So should I be concerned Avast did not find this, or can I just ignore it now that it's quarantined? Did scans with both MB and Avast and found nothing since.

PUP = Possible Unwanted Program ... usually crap that comes bundled with freeware downloads

Avast PUP detection is default off in all shields/scan except for boot scan, so if you want avast PUP detection you need to turn it on in all shields/scan you want it
