Open ports required for Avast home updates?
« on: February 12, 2006, 11:52:31 PM »
Just wondering if anyone can tell me what ports are required to be open for Avast home to update its virus definitions.  The only information I can find is at http://www.avast.com.au/i_kat_314.html which lists the sites required for updating but not the ports used.  Cheers, Seamus.

Well I believe the updates use regular http port 80 access but rather than assign ports there are only three elements that require internet access avast.setup (avast! update), ashWebSv.exe (avast! web scanner) and ashMaiSv.exe (avast! mail scaner).

I would have thought that your firewall logs should be able to confirm what ports are used by avast ?
What is your firewall ?
Windows 10 Home 64bit/ Acer Aspire F15/ Intel Core i5 7200U 2.5GHz, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD/ avast! free 24.3.6108 (build 24.3.8975.762) UI 1.0.801/ Firefox, uBlock Origin, uMatrix/ MailWasher Pro/ Avast! Mobile Security

Active Ports confirms port 80 for both manual iAVS and manual program updates.  Probably the same for automatic updates.

I believe the open ports don't have anything to do with updates - updates are performed as ordinary HTTP downloads.

... which lists the sites required for updating ...
That list is incomplete, there are currently 46 update servers and not only 8. Complete and up2date list of update servers is in C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\Servers.def file.

For automatic updates must be permitted outbound ICMP/ECHO for checking for connection and outbound TCP/HTTP for downloading of updates.
