Hardware to old? (using Os X 10.6.8)

Hi peoples

I was trying to install the newest version of Avast but the installation would not start.

I go the message:
Installation Error: This software requires 64-bit support.

I don't know what that means.
I have an old macbook pro from 2006 and I can't upgrade the operating system any further...is it possible to get an older version of Avast that could run with my computer or is that perhaps pointless?

Any of you know about another possible solution?

You need an 64 bit CPU (and OS X) to run Avast. Your Mac is apparently an old 32bit one, so it can not run Avast.
Unfortunately, there is no usable Avast version that would run on such system, sorry.

You may try to find some other AV that can run on such system, but AFAIK Avast is the AV with the best OS support
amongst the Mac AVs (most others require OS X 10.8 as the minimum), so you will most probable find anything...

2006 era MacBooks used the Intel Core Duo processor. While many CPUs of that time were 64-Bit this one was not, and unfortunately apple used it heavily (MacBook/Pro, Mac Mini and iMac).  All of those systems have a Maximum useable OS version of 10.6.8 and can not be upgraded further.

You will need a newer Mac to use avast, and most any program at this point.
