Alternative to Avast for older computer

Regarding Avast 4 Dos, found this:

                  "The version has now been superseded by avast! 4 Home Edition and Professional Edition; virus database updates for this Edition will cease on February 1st 2006. This download is now unsupported, users still relying on this Edition for their sole antivirus protection should upgrade to avast! 4 before February 2006 in order to maintain their antivirus protection against the latest threats."

Addendum:

Another avast webpage however suggests support is still ongoing:

Maybe someone from avast can clarify things?

I'd put it this way: right now, the virus database is updated, but it may stop any time (without additional warnings). Besides, even the current update may not (and does not, I think) detect all the malware present in avast! 4 virus database.
