Avast 4 prevent NNTP and SMTP access
« on: February 15, 2006, 09:39:49 PM »
I have recently upgraded to the current version of Avast 4 (4.6.763) and have noticed I can no longer send email, or retrieve news. I am using Opera mail and news reader. (using win2k,sp4 Opera 8.5 build 7700). I also have ZoneAlarm version:6.1.737.000.

Disabling outbound scanning of email restores the email, but I have to disable both out and inbound scanning to get my news feed back.

If any of these are selected, I get a connect error 10061 reported by opera.

I don't mind not scanning out bound stuff, but am not happy not scanning inbound news.

Any help gratefully received.

Mike

avast doesn't block/prevent it scans and alerts to infection.

ashMailSv.exe requires full internet access in the Program control section of ZA, you may well have blocked it because you didn't know what it was when asked permission by ZA.

Hello David,

Is ashMailSv a new addition in 4.6.763? Cos mail sending (smtp) and news (nntp) both worked very recently.

However I will re-check ZA blocking.

Many thanks,

Mike

No it isn't a new addition, however, after a program update elements change and permission should be asked again. I would suggest even if it is allowed in ZA to delete the entry and check your mail, this will force ZA to ask permission again. Ensure you grant full access.

There have been a number of these ZA blocking programs that are allowed access in the last week, so the ZA settings/permissions database would seem to become corrupt or forgets things.

Welcome to the forums, Mike!    :)

Yes, with the last program update, I had to re-allow at least one of avast's services out through ZA Free again because of this program change. All of avast's services should be allowed through whatever firewall you use.

If you cannot trust your anti-virus program,
then you have a serious problem.    :)
