4.x sufficient for 98se home network?
« on: February 15, 2006, 07:23:39 PM »
I didn't see a current topic that addressed this particular situation, but the drift I get from the archived msgs is: for noncommercial home use, whether on 1 standlone computer or several networked, the 4.x Home will suffice.
I'm coming up on renewal of my Symantec firewall and want to drop them due to concerns similar to what has come out about Zonealarm (backdoors intentionally put there by the manufacturer).
I have 3 computers running Win98se networked on a Linksys wired router using a DSL connection.
I would have already upgraded to XP but the 3 computers we have are 5+ years old and upgrading would mean buying 3 new machines  :o.
Thanks in advance, I just heard about avast for the first time on another forum talking about the Zonealarm scandal.

avast isn't a network/server AV but a stand alone solution that would need to be installed on each system on the network. So aside from the do you qualify for home, non-commercial use you can install the Home version on multiple systems in the Home using the same registration key.

avast isn't a firewall although it has some protection against known vulnerabilities, so you would require a firewall solution.

If you have any other Symantec/Norton security products, they can be a pig to remove with some elements and registry keys hanging on even after Add Remove programs uninstall.
Windows 10 Home 64bit/ Acer Aspire F15/ Intel Core i5 7200U 2.5GHz, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD/ avast! free 24.3.6108 (build 24.3.8975.762) UI 1.0.801/ Firefox, uBlock Origin, uMatrix/ MailWasher Pro/ Avast! Mobile Security

Thanks for clearing that up! I'll be very watchful when I uninstall Symantec to see if it turns into a >:( badger that won't let go.

I think you will probably be OK provided you didn't have any Norton or Symantec AV solutions installed. Just in case for the future, a link worth looking at which is a program removal tool, which can remove the remnants of a number of different Norton Programs:
Removing your Norton program using SymNRT

adkturn, I think you will find that avast! will work well on each one of your computers. I used (and still do) avast on my old computer which is still running W98SE on dial-up.

Welcome to the forums, come back often, learn more, and maybe help others.    :)

No problem, it is well worth bookmarking for the future, just in case.
