Since you are using win8 Pro, you will find that, the same was true of win7 Pro (and win 7 Ultimate), but for some reason the win7 Home. That is why I made that comment about is this "compatibility mode (without have to have purchased a certain win8 version)"  version specific.

So if anyone is using win 8 home if they can check if compatibility mode is available.

Compatibility Mode was available in the Home Version of Windows 7.
What makes you assume it will not be available in Windows 8 home ???

Because of what I had read in the past as to a certain extent it was a VM environment of that OS.

Hope this answers your question:

Simply doing a right click on any program and then selecting
properties gives you access to the Compatibility option.

That compatibility option has been available since XP and is nothing new. The thing that gets run in a VM environment is the XP mode which is only available in Windows 7 Professional and above and is something completely different.

The Compatibility Troubleshooter certainly was not available in XP.

Maybe not that part but the rest of it was. The troubleshooter is just an automated way of determining which mode to use instead of picking it yourself. My point is that I think DavidR was talking about the XP mode of Win 7 and not the simple compatibility mode which does not use a VM environment.

You're talking about Hyper V and that's totally different from Compatibility Mode.

My point is that I think DavidR was talking about the XP mode of Win 7 and not the simple compatibility mode which does not use a VM environment.

That is essentially it as I didn't know the exact name for the function, it was more of running in a VM environment of the OS rather than compatibility mode. Though I don't really know how good the compatibility mode would be, if for instance you want to install a program that requires XP.

That was my concern as I have several old programs that wont even run/install on win7 (an old accounts package and some others that do all I need of them), so if using win8 I wouldn't have to replace this software and that is where the additional expense of an upgrade comes in.

I'd be happy to test one of those programs for you David using Compatibility Mode which is available in all versions of Windows 8. :)

Thanks for the offer - I'm probably going to soldier on with them on my XP system and when XP is no longer supported (April 2014) it will be taken off line as none of the programs require internet access.

Who knows what will be around that time.

Actually, I was not talking about Hyper-V at all but rather what is described here.

According to the Wall Street Journal, IBM bought a software company. The cost was $1.3B.
