Unlike the Mac there is more than one manufacturer :P and they aren't employed by MS so exercising control over say Dell by MS, somehow I don't think Mr Dell would be to impressed at that suggestion.

I don't think that there have been many sales of Vista that haven't been pre-installed on new systems.

I only use the OS that my systems come with, with the recent exception of dual booting with Ubuntu recently  ;D.

I guess I'm not very thankful as I only use #8, #10, #13, #32 and #34

They don't mention Windows Defender nor WinPatrol

Thanks for pointing this out to me. It's been fixed.
One of the problems with using FF and the fact that I still can't get it to focus on the current tab.
One of the reasons I mainly now use SRWare Iron.  :)

Before You Connect a New Computer to the Internet
Interesting read. What are your thoughts ???

From my first brief scan of it too long winded,  and boring I almost fell asleep.

My that really was hard work, I just couldn't get into the reams of text, so I fear it would be less than helpful for your average user.

Back for another crack at it - It doesn't mention an anti-virus until you get to part III if a user hasn't fallen asleep by then, they are likely to have already been infected ;D

Its weakness it the information is on-line talking about what to do before you go on-line. So I think you can guess I don't think much of it.

Before I Would Connect a New Computer to the Internet I would download avast!, ZoneAlarm, Opera & WinPatrol onto a USB flash drive with my old computer.  2. Clean off any av preloaded on the new machine. 3. Load my above security set up onto the new 'puter.  4. Set up OpenDNS.

While the newly downloaded avast! set up doesn't have the latest data base, it is sure better than plugging in the machine without it! ;)

That is the problem if it were a users first computer, you have to connect to get all this stuff. So the Before you would connect, is a bit of chicken and egg scenario as I outlined in my previous post ;D

There will always be that danger point of a new computer user going on-line with their trousers round their ankles.
