I tried HerdProtect about a week ago, did a scan, one of the things it found was Open Candy in an Avast file. Any experts have a comment on this?

Microsoft will pay money towards an upgrade!

http://money.cnn.com/2014/03/24/technology/windows-xp-upgrade/index.html?hpt=hp_t5

No thanks. Win 8 is the new ME and Vista. Notice the quick upgrade to 8.1, anyone? Now, if the offer were for Win 7...

Even for double that it would still be no thanks. Win8 is still falling off a cliff. I have seen recent stats that don't even give it 10% market share.

Why not dish out free win8.1 licenses, that would surely be less than $100. But many would just keep the license and upgrade to win9 at no cost.

Win 8.1 is better than XP in nearly every aspect. The only real negative after you install something like Classic Shell is that it does take more space on your HDD. The difference (which by the way is less than that for Win 7) is worth it in my honest opinion. This is coming from somebody who absolutely loved XP.

Well I can't speak for win8.1 having never used it, but I have win7 on my netbook and for me I have to question who actually own that win7 system me or Microsoft. There are absolutely lots of things that I can do on XP Pro that I'm constantly hassled in relation to permissions/ownership, hence my comment 'who the hell owns the system.'

Whilst win8.1 may be better than 8.0, I won't be buying it, I would be more likely to get win7 Pro on my next system upgrade. But with so many users keeping away from win8 and MS talking about win8.2 and some thoughts that win8.2 won't happen and go straight to win9.

Who knows my next OS change could be win9, but that still leaves me probably having to change a lot of software at the same time, so any System/OS upgrade isn't something to take lightly.

I'm in no rush.

As someone who has used windows 8 since very early beta days, I didn't have to give up a single program that I had on my Windows 7 system.
I was actually able to install a few 16 bit programs that never worked on Windows 7.
So, giving up anything is a myth not a fact. :)

I think the only reason Win8 hasn't taken off is that people don't take the time to learn it properly and get past the metro, I have mine set so that I never see the metro side of things unless I click the windows key so I'm left with what is essentially a highly optimised win7.

I also see no need for any of the start menu programs because it's quite simple to turn the metro interface into your Start Menu/quick program access - so it works like the normal start menu with one click of the windows key and you have visual access to everything.
