Windows is giving out a free genuine converter for xp!
Microsoft is providing users with the means to turn their pirated copies of Windows into genuine products.
However, the offer is only available for Windows XP, and not for Windows Vista.
Users of pirated Windows are still Microsoft customers, in the company's perspective, although this might not always be the case.
However, the company has poured a consistent amount of efforts into initiatives designed to protect both customers and partners from the inherent problems
associated with counterfeit copies of the Windows operating system.
In this context, Microsoft has debuted a new licensing program designed to permit victims of software piracy to convert counterfeit Windows
into a genuine and properly licensed operating system. The Get Genuine Windows Agreement (GGWA) introduced on October 2, 2007,
comes to complement the Get Genuine Kit (GGK), which Microsoft has in place since mid 2006.
One shortcoming of the licensing program is the fact that it is limited to the enterprise environment, and is not available to end users.
An additional caveat is the fact that GGWA is limited to Windows XP. At this point in time,
Microsoft indicated no signs that it plans to make the licensing program available for Windows Vista.
"We are listening to our customers and partners about what they need in terms of programs to help resolve licensing issues.
With their feedback and the most recent technologies, we are actively developing licensing solutions such as GGK and GGWA that help customers
who have unknowingly purchased counterfeit software or whose Microsoft Windows licensing needs to be made right.
These programs provide businesses a simple way to acquire genuine Windows licenses of Windows XP software through their reseller and through volume licensing,
which is the same way they generally acquire other software applications," explained Cori Hartje, director of Microsoft’s Genuine Software Initiative.
Microsoft essentially makes it extremely easy for businesses to "turn themselves in" as Windows pirates. The company is offering corporate customers running
counterfeit versions of Windows the chance to acquire a perpetual license for Windows XP Professional. Business customers running at least five copies of pirated Windows
can opt to purchase legitimate licenses via Volume Licensing program from a reseller. The licensing process will enable corporate users to streamline the process
of transitioning from running illegal copies of Windows to complete legalization.
"The Get Genuine Kit (GGK) can only be acquired through our resellers. The Get Genuine Windows Agreement (GGWA) will enable distributors,
resellers, and LARs to expand their businesses by enabling them to sell scalable solutions through volume licensing. This enables them to address legalization requirements
within their customer’s existing environment. In addition, with GGWA they can offer customers our Software Assurance (SA) maintenance program within 90 days of the GGWA acquisition. Partners may also leverage software asset management (SAM) tools such as the Microsoft License Statement (MLS) and provide additional SAM consulting services",
Hartje added.

The genuine xp's will have ads to support the cost, the initiative was actually planned for 3rd world countries where pirate xps are most common

Laptop Battery That Runs 30 Years

Your next laptop could have a continuous power battery that lasts for 30 years without a single recharge
thanks to work being funded by the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory. The breakthrough betavoltaic power cells
are constructed from semiconductors and use radioisotopes as the energy source.
As the radioactive material decays it emits beta particles that transform into electric power capable of fueling
an electrical device like a laptop for years.
Although betavoltaic batteries sound Nuclear they’re not, they’re neither use fission/fusion or chemical processes to produce energy
and so (do not produce any radioactive or hazardous waste).
If all goes well plans are for these cells to reach store shelves in about 2 to 3 years.

Indian government forcing cybercafés to install keyloggers

Since anti-terrorism is used as the excuse for this action, I wonder which government will be next to follow this practice?

What's your take on this ?

In a public place? Why not? If people are advised of this practice.

Here is an provoking article from Computerworld:

Malware boom puts pressure on second-tier AV labs

"Massive increase in infectants overwhelming the researchers"

I'd so much like to hear alwil's opinion on that.

PC Decrapifier
For *NEW* XP & Vista machines ONLY
So, you're the proud owner of a new PC. You anxiously open the box, dumping out the contents, casting the instructions aside.
You feverishly push your old PC off the desk and get the new one set up. On the floor lies a pile of plastic wrap and twist ties.
Your brand spanking new PC boots up only to greet you with a plethora of pop up advertisements pestering you to pay for anti-virus software
or sign up for a music service. Your desktop is littered with website links for 'special offers.'
The system tray is already full of programs that continuously use your internet connection to make sure that you're 'up to date.'

"When did I ask for this?" you ask. Well, you didn't and that's where the PC Decrapifier comes in. The PC Decrapifier attempts to remove
all of the crap on your PC that you never asked for or wanted. To manually remove all of this stuff by hand can take at least an hour
(depending on the severity of the infestation.) The PC Decrapifier will detect the 'crap' on your system, you choose what to uninstall,
then sit back and let the PC Decrapifier work its magic.

All of this stuff is placed on your new PC because the big companies like Dell, HP and others sell advertising space on your PC
to put more money in their pockets at the expense of your time and frustration.
The PC Decrapifier is a program free for personal use to help the average computer user combat this problem.
It is also available for PC technicians at a small fee to use as a tool in their everyday business to save a tremendous amount of time.
It will not begin removing anything without prompting you first! You get to see the list of items it detects and then choose
what will be removed automatically.
The PC Decrapifier will uninstall many of the common trialware and annoyances found on many of the PCs from big name OEMs
Download the program now:

Whilst this is a great idea and tool, but beware if you ever have to do a reinstall, most only have a hidden partition and not a full OS OEM/Retail CD and using that partition sets everything back to how it left the factory, includonng the cr*pware.

One reason why once you've cleaned up the garbage, the next thing to do is to create an image of your
clean system.  :)
