The genuine xp's will have ads to support the cost, the initiative was actually planned for 3rd world countries where pirate xps are most common
Pirated software is decreasing here, as the latest news and data from companies.
I've read that 80% of UK Windows copies are pirated... Is it true? For sure, not a 3rd world country...

Yes, I've heard that too... for sure not a third World country... besides "third World" doesn't really exist, that's just ugly capitalism phrase.

I strongly doubt it is anywhere close to 80% if it were then MS would be jumping up and down. I would also think that if MS brought the cost of their OS to realistic prices and also stopped charging way over the ODDs for their OS in the UK then that would probably go a long way to combating any Piracy.

People will look for the best price they can get and buy the product in good faith only to find later that they have purchased a pirate copy. Now once they find they have a pirated copy what should they do, they have already lost the money they paid for a non-wga copy. They will be wary of repeating the exercise and the reason for looking for a good price was they couldn't afford it then they will probably stick with what they have got and stop visiting windows update.

One reason why once you've cleaned up the garbage, the next thing to do is to create an image of your clean system.  :)

How can I create an image of the disk? Please suggest some freeware that does the job  nicely. My OS is Vista Home Premium.

I haven't come across much in the way of good hard disk imaging software that is freeware (you could try a google search) and probably less when you talk of Vista compatibility.

Personally when I'm talking about a critical piece of software like disk imaging and the capability to recover from a catastrophe, I don't want to find that there are any errors or issues when you try to restore a back-up image. When you do get one you should test it by recovering a none essential partition, etc. before using it for the first time when the dark and sticky stuff hits the fan.

It is to a large degree a one of expenditure you don't have to buy it every year and believe me use it just once to save your a** and the cost has been more than recovered.

I don't know if this is Vista compatible but it's FREE and worth a look:

SelfImage is capable of making an image file of a hard disk or hard disk partition,
and can restore an image back to any drive or partition that doesn't have open files.
Download available from:
http://www.excelcia.org/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=viewdownload&cid=8
SelfImage-121.zip is also available from MySharedFiles

Thanx David. If one has to go in for a paid version, what should it be?

There are many paid for hard disk imaging software applications, but probably the two most prominent (read well known) are Acronis True Image and Norton spit Ghost. I'm still using PowerQuset's Drive Image 7.1, the last version before it was bought out by Symantec to be incorporated with/into Norton Ghost.

Tech, se224141 asked me about paid for options and I believe Bob simply added another to the two I suggested.
