What will I be doing, probably working on my XP Pro system.

I'm currently looking at a system upgrade my XP-M processor is somewhat long in the tooth. I'm toying with building another system to my spec as I have done with my last three systems, but I'm not into the aggravation these days. So it might be that I buy a new system that is close to my needs but I then have to decide what OS and I'm still not a Vista convert/evangelist ;D and I can get XP Pro installed. Somehow I doubt that June 30 will be the end of the ability to get XP.

It is getting desperate when MS are having to go to this trouble to kill take-up of XP.

Vista has been a thorn is the side of MS. Everyone has been Fighting its adoption more than any other release of windows I can remember. I know We have seen more People switching to The Mac because they went to buy a machine and were unable to get one with XP loaded and refused to buy vista, and decided to give Mac OS X a try. Im sure people have gave Linux a try too.

Ive heard Dell and HP have found a way around the June 30th date for business users through something called "Downgrade Rights"

I'm all for change, if and when it is done correctly and for the better. Microsoft had a long time in which to get Vista "spot on" they failed. imo
Vista migration requires too much of a change for too little gain if any?

When you're on a good thing stick to it! Roll on XP

Not worrying about it ...

... and probably paying more attention to the reputed doubling of my download and upload speeds from my ISP on that date.

Apple announces ZFS on Snow Leopard
A modern file system on a consumer OS

Is this the straw that will break Microsoft's back ???

Well there was supposedly going to be a new file system with Vista to replace the ageing NTFS (which I don't use yet still on FAT32 ;D), but that got dropped. Then there is the slim possibility that it might make an appearance in Windows 7 ;D

Well Mac OS X is not just a consumer OS. Unlike Vista there is not 15 different versions, only one client version used by everyone, from consumer to enterprise.

The Same Holds True for Mac OS X Server. Only One Version not some jumbled mess of versions like Windows Server.

Except unlike Microsoft, Apple Will deliver ;D
BTW, Don't Feel, bad I still use FAT32 as well on my External HD so that I can Swap it between My Mac and PC.

NTFS is specifically a windows format and requires drivers for other OSes to be able to work with it, many are able to read it but not work with it. This is why when trying to use a Linux live CD to recover data on a crashed system for example some need drivers to be able to do this.

Whereas fat32 is an OS independent format which is recognised by most OSes and able to work with that format without additional drivers.

Mac OS X Can read NTFS formatted disks but not write to them, thats why I use FAT32 still.

I have Ubuntu on my notebook, and Vista Ultimate on my desktop, Ubuntu can write on NTFS drives, so I keep all my external HDD NTFS.

No question that Microsoft needs a new file system, hopefully WinFS will come out in Windows 7, NTFS just doesn't do a great job on today's machines.
